Facebook Announcement

In my ever-expanding plans for world domination through blogging, I’m happy to announce a brand spanking new Daddy Geek Boy page on Facebook.

You read my blog and you follow me on Twitter, why should you “like” DGB on FB? Well, if you’re as addicted to Facebook as I am you probably spend more time interacting with people there than anywhere else and the FB page will send a link to every post right to your news feed. Plus links to other blog posts, like Reeling movie reviews and Culture Brats. And every once in a while, I might link to something funny or interesting like this.

Don’t worry if you’re not on Facebook. This place will always be the hub of any DGB activities. But if you are amongst the 500 million people who use FB, click here to pop on over, check out the new digs and click that like button.

I humbly thank you.

Happy Birthday to Blog

On a whim three years ago this day I opened a Blogger account, dubbed myself Daddy Geek Boy and wrote the following words:

It's a known fact that there aren't enough people blogging in the world. We're not going to use up the internet unless we really try.

Thus this blog was born.

I never expected anyone more than my family and a few friends to read it. I never expected that I’d still be at it nearly 360 posts later. But here I am and here it is and here you are.

Happy birthday little blog! And a big thank you to all of my readers for the motivation to keep it going. You guys are awesomely awesome.

I'm a Brat

The awesome blogger Chag from the awesome blog Cynical Dad started something really cool.  It's a brand spanking new blog called Culture Brats.  And guess who he's invited to be a contributor?

A lot of really cool and talented bloggers.

Foolishly, they have asked me to join them.

The blog went live this week and it's already chock filled with stuff about music, movies, TV and one of the coolest features, Criss Cross Counterpunch, where 80s pop culture is thrown into a battle royal to answer important questions like, Which is the better album, Prince's Purple Rain or Michael Jackson's Thriller.

My first post over there is about, what else, movies and the current 3D trend that's sweeping through multiplexes.

I strongly suggest you click on over to Culture Brats and poke around.  It's totally awesome.

Meet the Blogger

Regular readers of this here blog probably know more about me than they should, but if you're interested, I'm the subject of today's "Meet the Blogger" over at Real World: Venus vs. Mars today.

I also want to throw a big thank you out there to uber-blogger Shelle, who runs that site. She is super dedicated and organized and has created a blog that encourages healthy, interesting and sometimes funny discussion and debate between the sexes. I'm proud to be a contributor.

Offsprung Has Me Reeling

Early on in my life as a parent, WonderWife™ bought me the book Alternadad. Though I was a dad, I'm not one who most would call "Alterna". Nonetheless, I felt that the tome's author, Neal Pollack, was a kindred spirit. I immediately began cyber-stalking him. This is how I came to find Offsprung.

Offsprung is an online parenting community started by Neal as an outgrowth of his book. The site contains columns written by some fantastic writers and a bulletin board where people talk about everything from parenting advice to politics to the random songs on their iPods. It's where "Daddy Geek Boy" was born before I began blogging. In short, it's a fantastic community filled with witty people who, over the years, I have come to call my friends.

Why am I telling you all of this?

Today, Offsprung is re-launching with a shiny new format. Somehow the new management thinks that I might have something to contribute and has asked me to write a movie blog for them. The blog is called "Reeling" and my first post is up today. It involves a whole mess of anthropomorphic animals.

So click on over to Offsprung, play around and check out my new blog. It's my internet home away from home and a community that has saved my sanity one too many times.

Our Idealized Selves

Over at Hot Dads today, I compare being on line with being a parent. I think it kind of makes sense. Click on over and check it out. Here's a taste:

My friends tell me that I’m much funnier in my blog than I am in real life. I wish I could disagree with them, but they’re kind of right. In real life, it’s usually the most obvious joke that pops to mind and unfortunately for those around me, I lack the impulse control not to say it.

Redirection: Venus vs. Mars

I've always gotten along really well with women. I have a lot of women friends. Most of my bosses have been women. My wife is a woman. This camaraderie has extended into my blogging life as well, where the women bloggers outnumber the men by a great majority. A couple of fantastic women Shelle-BlokThoughts and Andrea-Blogging Mama started a new blog called The Real World: Venus Vs. Mars and invited me to guest post. Needless to say, I was honored and flattered.

So click on over today to check out my post. They're a good bunch. I think you'll like 'em.

When You Can Say the Word "Poopy"

The past 24 hours have been madness I tell you, madness. I have a plate and it's full, but there's more stuff piling on top of it. Work has been, and will be, frenetic for the foreseeable future. I'm woefully behind editing my home videos (thus incurring the wrath and scorn of both sides of my family). I have a half dozen things that I've written, but can't seem to carve out the time (and truthfully the energy) to finish them. What I really need is about three Red Bulls and half a day with no responsibilities--work, parenting or otherwise--to get caught up.

WonderWife™ is currently out a girls' night--an event only slightly more rare than a sighting of Halley's Comet. While the house is quiet, and the kids are asleep, I'm taking the opportunity to get some of this stuff done. But it would be wrong of me to ignore you guys whilst I cross things off of my to do list, so I present you this exchange between the Bean and me:

WonderWife™: The Bean only gets one story tonight.

DGB: Oh yeah? (turning to the kid) So what did you do?

The Bean: I did something naughty.

DGB: Like what?

The Bean: I said...um...I said (trails off incoherently).

DGB: You said what?

The Bean: (hesitating) Poo...

DGB: You said "poopy"?*

The Bean: (relief) Yes! I said (pause) "poopy".

DGB: You know, when you're telling me the bad word you said, it's okay to say it.

*I know that on the scale of bad words, "poopy" ranks near the bottom next to "drat" and "shoot". But you gotta draw the line somewhere. "Poopy", when used properly, is like a gateway curse.

I Read Too Much

The past two days have been really crazy and I haven't had a lot of time with my laptop. Checking back in today, Google Reader tells me I have 70 new blog posts to read. Not to mention the endless threads that were stared on my internet home away from home, Offsprung.

If I subscribe to your blog, I want to read everything you write and comment when appropriate (comments are a blogger's currency, you know). But man, you guys are prolific.

Or it's entirely probable that I'm trying to read too much.
